The Publishing and Communications program at the University of Melbourne is well known and widely respected within the Australian publishing industry. Publishing and communications in the 21st century is changing rapidly, and the University’s program reflects this by offering diverse and flexible career paths both in print and digital media. We combine hands-on skills development with in-depth analysis of all areas of the industry to equip students for a wide array of future work in the areas of book and magazine publishing, digital and web-based publishing, and other forms of professional communications.
Our staff are publishing industry experts, ensuring that our teaching reflects a broad spectrum of the skills and expertise employers are looking for: editorial work, print production, project management, marketing and the new skills and literacies required to be successful in a digital environment. Our well-established internship program has links with over 150 organisations, enabling students to gain valuable hands-on experience by working closely with industry mentors. Through these placements, students learn about the broader dynamics of the publishing and communications industry, and have the opportunity to undertake their own research projects for further study in their area of interest.
The program offers four postgraduate degrees to accommodate students’ differing goals and levels of experience:
