Media and Communications at the University of Melbourne was ranked by the Australian Research Council in 2011 as ‘world class’. Our courses reflect this international standing.

We train students for careers in the fast-changing professional areas of digital, broadcast, print and mobile communication. We equip students with an in-depth understanding of the changing nature of media industries and professional practices in the contemporary world and of how these industries inform diverse social, cultural and political processes at global to local levels. Students enquire into politics, economics, and technologies and develop critical concepts, learning how to conduct independent research while developing the skills required to be practitioners in the media industry.

Undergraduate and postgraduate

Our undergraduate and postgraduate students come from diverse countries. This diversity of background and experience is welcomed and helps to test out the relevance and adequacy of contemporary positions of media communication theory and research. The Media and Communications program enjoys close links with media industries and professionals, and experienced media practitioners frequently contribute lectures and seminars to our various subjects. Our students benefit from the expertise of Media and Communications Program Fellows and international visiting scholars, and from insights offered in the Distinguished Industry Lecture Series.

Our undergraduate course, a major in the new Bachelor of Arts degree, trains a new generation of professionals with a specialization in Media and Communications in the wider context of society and culture. The BA major is taught by recognized experts in the field and involves regular guest lectures by industry professionals.

Our Master of Global Media Communication

Graduate coursework students, undertaking the Master of Global Media Communication, follow a course of critical and professional studies in 21st century media. The course is explicitly interdisciplinary in nature and offers a distinctive blend of academic study and media-relevant practice delivered by internationally recognised scholars and experienced industry professionals. It also includes opportunities for experiential based learning with media industry internships alongside taught subjects and research-based theses.  Masters students are encouraged to undertake international exchange, drawing on the Program’s global links and preferred partner networks.

Doctoral research

We offer doctoral candidates the opportunity to pursue their research within a vibrant interdisciplinary research community. PhD students come to Melbourne from a number of world regions and internationally recognized experts in the field supervise their research. Graduate students are encourage to present their findings and given opportunities to publish their work in our fully refereed graduate journal, PLATFORM.
