Biography
Prior to joining the University of Melbourne's Media and Communications Programme, Umi was associate professor in communication at the National University of Malaysia (UKM). She also freelanced and wrote as a columnist for Malaysia's national English language newspaper, The New Straits Times.

Current research
Umi deploys methodological plurality in her research on screen mediated public and global campaigns. She has examined a range of public and commercial campaigns in the Asian region including the mediatisation of HIV/AIDS. Her current research focuses on Diasporas, trans-border flow and media use in Southeast Asia. Umi is also currently conducting a comparative study on Islam, minorities and public culture in Australia, Indonesia and Malaysia.
