Dr Fran Martin

Lecturer, Cultural Studies

Biography

Fran received both her BA (hons) and her PhD from Melbourne University. She spent two years studying Mandarin language and Chinese literature at Beijing Second Foreign Languages Institute and East China Normal University between 1989 and 1991. Later, she spent a further two years researching in Taiwan, most recently at National Taiwan Central University's Center for the Study of Sexualities (2005). Prior to joining the Cultural Studies program at the University of Melbourne, Fran lectured in the Cinema Studies program at La Trobe University.

Current research

A monograph arising from a three-year ARC Discovery research project (2003-05) entitled Backward Glances: Chinese Popular Cultures and the Female Homoerotic Imaginary (currently under review)

A collection co-edited with Peter Jackson, Mark McLelland and Audrey Yue entitled AsiaPacifiQueer: Rethinking Genders and Sexualities. Illinois University Press, 2008 (in press).

A comparative study on lifestyle television across different national contexts, collaborating with Dr Tania Lewis (Monash University).
