Courses

All the Media and Communications Program courses aim to equip students to understand the changing nature of media industries and professional practices in the contemporary world and how these inform diverse social, cultural and political processes at global to local levels. An emphasis of the program is to encourage students to identify key areas of media-related interest and concern and conduct their own analysis in sustained inquiry and research. To this end, all students are introduced to and deploy diverse theoretical frameworks as well as methods of media analysis and methodologies. This makes for an exciting and critically engaged learning experience where students deploy and develop skills of media analysis in close study of relevant media materials and mediated events. A rich diversity of core subjects and complementary optional subjects are available and these facilitate individually selected pathways both within and through our various postgraduate courses.

Our postgraduate students come from diverse countries, have experience of different media systems and many are working, or aim to pursue careers, in media and related cultural industries. This diversity of background and experience is welcomed and helps to test out the relevance and adequacy of contemporary positions of media communication theory and research. The program enjoys close links with media industries and professionals, and experienced media practitioners frequently contribute lectures and seminars to our various subjects. Some courses also include opportunities for experiential based learning with media industry 'internships' alongside taught subjects and research-based theses. Courses are taught by internationally recognised media communication scholars and are informed by the best teaching practices and facilities.
