Course Overview
The MA (Global Journalism) provides students with advanced understanding of the practices and performance of contemporary global journalism. Students will engage with diverse theoretical approaches and case studies, and develop and apply a range of methods of analysis.

Students who complete the MA Global Journalism will be able to:
- demonstrate an informed awareness of the changing global and international contexts of media communication and journalist practices and how these are currently being researched and studied
- demonstrate understanding of major positions of theory and debate informing journalism studies and be able to critically engage with these
- appraise and evaluate the role of method and methodology in news and journalism research
- engage in applied study and sustained analysis of aspects of journalism production, practice, representation and impact and present this in conformity to protocols of academic presentation and research practice
- critically reflect on current trends in journalism practice and output and contending explanations of these with particular emphasis on questions of globalisation/localisation, convergence, identity, citizenship and media approached as public sphere(s).
Stream Description 200 point program
Duration: 2 year full-time / up to 4 years part-time
First 100 points:
- eight subjects (8 x 12.5 points) of specified fourth-year level study (at least five Media and Communications core subjects and up to three optional subjects).
Second 100 points: As for the 100 point program.
A total of 200 points. Subjects are 12.5 points unless otherwise specified.
150 point program Duration: 1.5 year full-time / up to 3 years part-time
First 50 points:
- four subjects (4 x 12.5 points) of specified fourth-year level study (at least three Media and Communications core subjects).
Second 100 points: As for the 100 point program.
A total of 150 points. Subjects are 12.5 points unless otherwise specified.
100 point program
Duration: 1 year full-time / up to 2 years part-time
- 50 points of compulsory 500 level subjects
- 50 points of core subjects
or

Admission Requirements
The Selection Committee will evaluate the applicant's ability to pursue successfully the course using the following criteria -
For the 200 point program
- an undergraduate degree in a cognate discipline with a grade average of at least H2B (70%) in the relevant subjects, or equivalent.
For the 150 point program
- an undergraduate degree in a cognate discipline with a grade average of at least H2B (70%) in the relevant subjects and at least one year of full time documented relevant work experience, or equivalent.
For the 100 point program
- an honours degree in a cognate discipline with at least a H2B (70%), or equivalent
or - an undergraduate degree in a cognate discipline with a grade average of at least H2B (70%) in the relevant subjects and at least two years of full time documented relevant work experience, or equivalent.
