Media and Communications Masters thesis progress reporting

Progress Report 1

All Masters by Research students in the Faculty of Arts are required to submit a thesis progress report of 4000–5000 words (not including timetable and bibliography) within the first 6 months of full-time enrolment in their thesis (12 months for part-time candidates). The intention of the report procedure is to produce a structured timetable within which the candidate can work to define the project and provide a semi-formal forum for feedback, discussion and for assisting candidates to proceed successfully through their program.

The report should include the following:

  1. a concise statement of the objective of the proposed enquiry, with a clear and precise definition of the topic of the thesis and a statement of the argument which it is hoped to sustain;
  2. a review and analysis of the relevant literature;
  3. a description of the methodological approach to be adopted in the enquiry;
  4. a bibliography of source material; and
  5. a tentative timetable for the completion of the research.

Candidate and supervisor will discuss the report, and sign it. It should then be submitted to the Research Administrator, who will present it to the Head of School or Chair of Research for signature, copy it for the file and forward it to the Faculty of Arts Research and Postgraduate Studies Office. In the event of an unsatisfactory report being received, the candidate will be invited to re-work and re-submit the report within a period not exceeding 8 months (or part-time equivalent) from the start of candidature.
