Media and Communications postgraduate research facilities
School Study Spaces
The School of Culture & Communication provides several common spaces expressly for the use of our research higher degree (RHD) students (PhD and research masters), and also allocates office space twice yearly.
Common Spaces
The common spaces are open for any RHD student to use on a casual basis: John Medley 631 is an open common room, which offers: several networked computers; tables and armchairs; a printer for which postgraduates need to provide their own paper; fridge and microwave; wireless networking.
Elisabeth Murdoch 112 and G30 are both set up with desks and networked computers, printers and various other facilities. These two rooms are now available to all the School's RHD students and are fitted with keypads for easy access. There is no after-hours access to Elisabeth Murdoch, so EM112 and G30 are only available when the building is actually open (hours vary according to semester or non-teaching periods).
If you would like to use these rooms for study, please contact Ishara or Jessica and they will tell you the access code.
Offices for Allocation
The School retains a number of offices on the 6th floor of the John Medley Building for allocation to RHD students. All these offices contain two or more workspaces, and desktop computers can usually be provided on request. A printer is available in 631.
Postgraduates should be aware that there is often more demand for space than can be accommodated. If you are granted access to a study space, it is expected that you will make regular and consistent use of this space. If you are not using it regularly, you owe it to your fellow postgraduates to give up that study space so it can be made available to another student. This will not render you less eligible if you wish to apply for space again at a later date.

University Study Spaces
The Graduate Centre has study rooms available for research students, for use on a time-share or room-share basis. Carrels are booked by the semester and preference is given to students in the writing-up stage of their research. Graduate Centre study rooms are allocated by the Graduate Sudent Association (GSA).
The Baillieu Library has a limited number of carrels available to both MA and PhD candidates, while only PhD students may apply for the very limited number (21) of offices. Enquire at the Loans Desk in the Baillieu Library.
The Faculty of Arts provides a limited number of postgraduate study spaces to Masters by research and PhD students. Preference is given to students in the final stages of their candidature.
Interlibrary Loans (ILL)
You can request items on Interlibrary Loan (ILL) through the online system. For international loans or thesis purchase, make sure you have your supervisor’s approval. Postgraduate students do not have to pay any ILL costs for materials legitimately related to their thesis research.
Photocopying
Postgraduates are eligible for photocopying grants of $50 ($25 for part-time students) in each year of their candidature. Apply directly to the Research Students Administrator, either in person or by email. The documentation will take at least one working day to produce.
Purchasing books
Book-buying is not funded. If you would like to order books for the library that it does not currently have, send your recommendations directly to the Director of Library Resources, Dr Justin Clemens.
