Introduction to Media and Communications

Media and Communications at the University of Melbourne offers an exciting range of undergraduate, postgraduate coursework and research based courses and awards. All courses aim to equip students to understand the changing nature of media industries and professional practices in the contemporary world and how these inform diverse social, cultural and political processes at global to local levels.

The Bachelor of Arts (Media and Communications) is a three-year full-time degree. Designed to be Australia's premier degree in this field, the BA (Media and Communications) provides students with optimal access to the globally expanding world of media and new communication technologies and to future postgraduate study and research. The course is deliberately interdisciplinary in nature and offers a distinctive blend of academic study and media-relevant practice delivered by internationally recognised scholars and experienced industry professionals.

Our postgraduate students come from diverse countries, have experience of different media systems and many are working in or aim to pursue careers in media and related cultural industries. This diversity of background and experience is welcomed and helps to test out the relevance and adequacy of contemporary positions of media communication theory and research.

The program enjoys close links with media industries and professionals, and experienced media practitioners frequently contribute lectures and seminars to our various subjects.

Some courses also include opportunities for experiential based learning with media industry internships alongside taught subjects and research-based theses. Courses are taught by internationally recognised media communication scholars and are informed by the best teaching practices and facilities.
