School of Culture & Communication Creative Writing

Introduction to Creative Writing

Creative Writing at the University of Melbourne offers students an exciting and productive environment in which to acquire and develop essential skills in creative writing through a range of subjects.

Creative Writing offers undergraduate students the opportunity to explore their own creative potential, and in second and third years specialise in prose fiction, poetry, scriptwriting, creative non-fiction and life writing. In addition, students will be challenged to extend their creative work to avant garde, cross-genre and experimental forms of writing. Students will also have opportunities to critically test the creative potential and the influence of contemporary theoretical and philosophical schools of thought on all forms of writing.

The postgraduate program is recognised nationally and internationally as one of the most exciting and progressive of its kind. Academic staff maintain a strong commitment to scholarly values, and actively encourage and support students in their passion for literature and writing. The School hosts a vibrant community of postgraduate students. Creative writing students make important contributions to the publication of School journals and actively participate in seminar programs designed to foster creative and critical debate.

Staff are experienced and widely published writers in their own fields and offer subjects and supervision in the areas of fiction, poetry, poetics, nonfiction, screenwriting, forms of autobiography, and theatre writing.
