Creative Writing Honours
Information for current students
Entry to Honours in Creative Writing requires the completion of the BA pass degree with a major in Creative Writing at a minimum overall standard of H2B.
The University of Melbourne Undergraduate Handbook provides course information:
Honours is a specialised year of study which qualifies students for study at the Masters or PhD level and/or allows them to specialise in an area of study to expand their employment opportunities and professional advancement.
The Honours program offered by the School of Culture and Communication places emphasis on students' own research and encourages a high degree of self-reflexivity. While it is not a requirement of the Honours thesis to invent a completely new approach, or to come up with an original methodology, it is nevertheless the case that many Honours theses do develop original slants or perspectives on established fields; or distinctive new readings of familiar, or less familiar texts; or raise important questions for established or emergent methodologies.
The Honours thesis is a crucial preparation for postgraduate research, but it also develops skills that will be useful for many careers beyond that of an academic researcher. Employers are increasingly looking for graduates who can:
- work independently
- readily synthesise and summarise prior work or research in a given field
- develop their own approaches and recommendations on the basis of that work
- express their ideas clearly and creatively
These are the skills that the Honours year teaches, as a whole.
How to apply for Honours
To apply:
- follow the procedure outlined on the Faculty of Arts Honours page
- email a copy of your 500 word thesis proposal to the Honours Coordinator with an indication of who your potential supervisor might be, if you have someone in mind.
