Contemporary Culture : Art in New York, June 2008
Please contact Associate Professor Charles Green c.green@unimelb.edu.au
Commences June 2008, New York
This subject is taught in New York during a one-month study tour. The visual arts form a significant component of the economy of New York; directly through the art market and tourism, indirectly through the physical and 'lifestyle' infrastructure sustaining the contemporary art scene. Exploring the arts precincts of New Yor amounts to an xamination of New York's recent history, the city'd own self image, and the changes afecting it in the 1990s. In addition to art galleries and museums, students will visit significant urban precincts such as Times Square, Byrant Park, Battery Park City, SoHo, Chelsea and Williamsburg.

Renaissance and Baroque Rome: City, Villa, Garden, January 2009
Please contact Associate Professor David R. Marshall david.marshall@unimelb.edu.au
Commences January 2009, Rome, Italy
This subject considers the city of Rome both from an urbanistic perspective, and in terms of the art and architectural history of its monuments. Its focus ranges from Michelangelo's sistine Ceiling, to Caravaggio's paintings in Roman chapel, to the architecture of Borromini, the sculpture of Bernini. Students learn to read the streetscape of Rome, investigating its churches, palaces and villas, and discovering the underlying urban structure going back to roman antiquity. Apart from examining key areas of Rome - from Piazza Navona to the Trevi Fountain to the Vatican - we look at the villas and gardens in the region (Bagnaia, Caprarola, Bomarzo, Tivoli, Subiaco, Frascati, Palestrina, Ariccia). Includes visits to most major Roman art museums. The subject concludes with a visit to key art museums in Florence.
