Please contact Associate Professor David R. Marshall david.marshall@unimelb.edu.au
Commences January 2009, Rome, Italy
This subject considers the city of Rome both from an urbanistic perspective, and in terms of the art and architectural history of its monuments. Its focus ranges from Michelangelo's sistine Ceiling, to Caravaggio's paintings in Roman chapel, to the architecture of Borromini, the sculpture of Bernini. Students learn to read the streetscape of Rome, investigating its churches, palaces and villas, and discovering the underlying urban structure going back to roman antiquity. Apart from examining key areas of Rome - from Piazza Navona to the Trevi Fountain to the Vatican - we look at the villas and gardens in the region (Bagnaia, Caprarola, Bomarzo, Tivoli, Subiaco, Frascati, Palestrina, Ariccia). Includes visits to most major Roman art museums. The subject concludes with a visit to key art museums in Florence.
