Course Description

The postgraduate diploma allows students to undertake a research project in a specialist field of study. Students will gain considerable knowledge in an area of art history and engage in critical assessment of the major theoretical claims of the discipline. The course provides a pathway to higher degree research for students who have not completed a four year BA (Honours) with a research component in art history.

Generic Skills Gained / Objectives

Students who complete the postgraduate diploma should:

  • have the capacity to prepare an original piece of research;
  • gain an in-depth knowledge of theories and methodologies about visual cultures;
  • develop the ability to analyse the critical reception of works of art.
Admission Requirements

The minimum entry requirement is:

  • an undergraduate degree with a major in art history, or a relevant cognate area such as studio art (BFA), history, with a grade average equivalent to an H2B (70%) at the University of Melbourne in the major
or
  • a Graduate Diploma in Arts (Art History) with a grade average equivalent to an H2B (70%) at the University of Melbourne.
