Study Spaces
The School of Culture & Communication provides several common spaces expressly for the use of our research higher degree (RHD) students (PhD and research masters), and also allocates office space twice yearly. The common spaces are open for any RHD student to use on a casual basis:John Medley 631 is an open common room, which offers: several networked computers; tables and armchairs; a printer for which postgraduates need to provide their own paper; fridge and microwave; wireless networking.
Elisabeth Murdoch 112 and G30 are both set up with desks and networked computers, printers and various other facilities. These two rooms are now available to all the School's RHD students, and will soon be fitted with keypads for easy access (in place of keys). There is no after-hours access to Elisabeth Murdoch, so EM112 and G30 are only available when the building is actually open (hours vary according to semester or non-teaching periods).
If you would like to use these rooms for study, please contact Ishara or Liz and they will tell you the access code. All keys to these rooms should be returned to Ishara / Liz as they will be superseded by the keypads.
Offices for allocation: the School retains a number of offices on the 6th floor of the John Medley Building for allocation to RHD students. All these offices contain two or more workspaces, and desktop computers can usually be provided on request. A printer is available in 631.
Postgraduates should be aware that there is often more demand for space than can be accommodated. If you are granted access to a study space, it is expected that you will make regular and consistent use of this space. If you are not using it regularly, you owe it to your fellow postgraduates to give up that study space so it can be made available to another student. This will not render you less eligible if you wish to apply for space again at a later date.
Planned absences can be accommodated (see Policy Document).
